ENGLISH: New entry protocols for the RMI

This is to inform the public of an adjustment to the protocol for entry into RMI.

This is to inform the public of an adjustment to the protocol for entry into RMI.

Since the community introduction of Covid-19 (Omicron BA5.0) in the RMI on 8 August 2022, widespread transmission has occurred on Majuro, Ebeye, Kwajalein and a number of neighbouring groups of atolls. During this initial wave of community transmission, rates of disease in the RMI greatly surpass those in many other countries.  RMI has the highest number of Covid-19 cases per capita than any other country at the present time and as the case rates fall, the RMI will be comparable with countries living with Covid-19.

With this new situation, Public Health experts recommended an adjustment to the protocol before entry into RMI eliminating the need for testing in Honolulu and Guam ports of entry, which is in line with CDC measures for the US and comparable to USAPI (US Affiliated Pacific Island) countries.  The NDC has discussed and approved this new set of protocols, as it makes medical/clinical sense given RMI’s situation is now no longer  Covid-19 free, and more importantly it is a recommendation from the Ministry of Health, Public Health Division, which has guided the NDC in all its decisions since February 2020 when the State of Emergency was declared.

With the elimination of testing outside of the RMI, testing on arrival in the RMI and 5 days self-quarantine will continue (until there is a need for further adjustments).

Current revised protocol is as follows:

Prerequisites (pre-travel) to RMI

  • Fully vaccinated against Covid-19: Primary series and boosted as eligible.
  • Mask wearing enroute and practicing good hand hygiene.

Upon Arrival in the RMI

  • Testing on Arrival in RMI
  • Rapid antigen test (Ag-RDT): Treatment as appropriate.
  • Five days home quarantine/isolation. If negative rapid antigen test on arrival, can move around in public but must wear a mask.
  • Anyone that initially tests negative on arrival and later develop symptoms consistent with COVID-19, should report to a health facility for COVID-19 testing and access to therapeutics (if eligible).
  • Compliance with masking and other public mandates.

NDC once again urges the public to:

  • Be socially responsible
  • Protect vulnerable individuals in your household by continuing Good Hand Hygiene and limited physical interaction.
  • Comply with Health Advisories measures and Government Directives
  • Implementation of mask wearing mandate for the next 2-3 months
